Research Background
BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide (primary sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV) corresponding to a partial sequence of a protein identified in human gastric juice, from which the name Body Protection Compound derives. It is supplied as a lyophilized, research-grade reference material.
Investigated in published preclinical research since the early 1990s across tissue-repair, gastrointestinal, vascular and neurological models. It is frequently characterized as notably stable in aqueous and acidic conditions, which is one reason it has been studied across multiple routes of administration in animal models.
Mechanism
Findings below derive from animal and cell-culture systems; they are not established effects in humans. BPC-157 is studied for angiogenesis via VEGFR2 signaling, with endothelial responses reported through the VEGFR2–Akt–eNOS axis (Hsieh et al.). It has also been studied for nitric oxide (NO) system modulation through the Src–caveolin-1–eNOS pathway, though the magnitude and direction remain under active debate in the 2025 literature. Additional preclinical findings include growth-hormone receptor (GHR) upregulation and downstream JAK2 signaling in tendon fibroblast cultures, FAK–paxillin and ERK1/2 signaling implicated in cell-migration and tissue-repair models, and anti-inflammatory modulation through reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines in injury models.
State of the Evidence
Research Evidence: based on a 2025 systematic review (Vasireddi et al., HSS Journal) screening 544 articles (1993–2024) and including 36 — 35 preclinical (animal/in-vitro) studies and 1 clinical study (a 2024 IV tolerance pilot, not an efficacy trial). Regulatory Status: not approved by the FDA for any use; subject to FDA attention in the compounding context (identified as raising safety concerns for compounding use). Included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. Availability Status: Research Only.

2. Preclinical / Mechanistic — “BPC-157 enhances angiogenesis via the VEGFR2–Akt–eNOS pathway” (Hsieh MJ, et al.). Found that BPC-157 increased vessel density in chick membrane and cell-culture models and increased VEGFR2 expression and internalization, triggering downstream Akt–eNOS signaling. PubMed 27847966
Appropriate characterization: a peptide with an extensive preclinical research literature and coherent proposed mechanisms, awaiting rigorous human study. Statements that BPC-157 “heals” or “treats” any condition in humans are not supported by current published evidence. The overwhelming majority of data is from animal and cell-culture models; human data is limited to small pilot studies, primarily tolerability rather than efficacy, without independent replication, and no large, controlled human efficacy trials have been published.

Safety Information
Research-use compound with limited human data. Not classified as hazardous based on currently available data, though the absence of classification is not a determination of absence of hazard; sensitization, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity cannot be excluded due to a lack of substance-specific data. Handle as a bioactive peptide of unknown toxicity: minimize exposure, weigh and reconstitute in a fume hood, and use nitrile gloves and eye protection. Store the lyophilized solid tightly closed and protected from light, moisture and heat (−20°C long-term, 2–8°C short-term working stock).
No established clinical contraindications. This is an investigational compound with limited human data and has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety in this context. Consult a qualified clinician. For research and educational purposes only, not for human or veterinary use.
